As assemblies become more complex and tolerances become tighter, manufacturers face growing demands for precision and production efficiency. As a key tool for part positioning and support, fixture pallet precision directly impacts assembly consistency and product quality. With Portable CMMs, manufacturers can perform accurate inspection and real-time adjustment directly on the shop floor, supporting efficient production while maintaining quality standards.
Challenges in Fixture Pallet Inspection

A leading automation solution provider serving the consumer electronics, automotive electronics, and industrial sectors has extensive experience in high-precision assembly and intelligent inspection.
However, routine fixture pallet inspection and alignment still relied on traditional tools such as calipers, dial indicators, and outsourced inspection services. As production volumes increased, long inspection cycles and delayed feedback increasingly reduced efficiency and often led to production delays and rework.
Therefore, the company required an on-site measurement solution that could deliver high accuracy, real-time feedback, and immediate adjustment directly on the shop floor.
PMT Portable CMM Measurement Solution

After evaluating multiple portable CMM brands based on accuracy and measuring range requirements, the company selected the PMT ALPHA M Series 6-axis Portable CMM with a 2.5 m measuring range. Its real-time adjustment capability helps operators detect deviations immediately and avoid batch rework.
Due to the tight delivery schedule, PMT completed shipment within only three days after contract confirmation and payment. Supported by PMT technical engineers, the company established a complete fixture pallet inspection workflow. Operators can now perform high-precision, on-site measurements of features such as hole diameters, flatness, and surface profiles directly on the shop floor.
Inspection reports are automatically generated and can be integrated into the company’s quality management system for documentation and long-term traceability.
Before vs. After: Using PMT Portable CMM
| Item | Before | After |
| Inspection Method | Calipers + outsourced inspection | PMT Portable CMM |
| Measurement Capability | Linear dimensions only; complex features required outsourced inspection with long time | Real-time inspection of dimensions, GD&T, surface profiles, holes, and complex geometries |
| Adjustment Process | Defects found after inspection; 2–3 days rework cycle | Real-time measurement and adjustment, reduced rework |
| Data Management | Manual records; inconsistent formats | Automatic reports with system integration and traceability |
| Cost Structure | Calipers (~RMB 10,000) + outsourced inspection (~RMB 2,000/day, 8-hour shift) | PMT Portable CMM (RMB 150,000–200,000) with long-term value and lifetime warranty |
Fixture Pallet Inspection Workflow
Analyze Drawing and Define Measurement Features
Based on the drawing, identify the corresponding features and reference datums on the fixture pallet, then define the measurement features and key inspection characteristics. Typical inspection items include hole diameter, hole position, flatness, parallelism, and surface profile.

Import the CAD Model
Fixture pallets are prone to wear and deformation over time, especially on reference surfaces. With multiple features to inspect, importing the CAD model enables more efficient comparison with nominal geometry.

Establish the Coordinate System
Since fixture pallet surfaces may deform over time, Best-Fit alignment is recommended. By collecting points from multiple reference features, it minimizes overall deviation and establishes a coordinate system closer to the actual workpiece condition.

Feature Probing
The PMT Portable CMM uses a zircon probe to collect data points from the workpiece surface. The software converts the acquired data into X, Y, Z coordinates and I, J, K vectors, automatically constructing geometric features and displaying dimensional information in real time.
Data Evaluation and Analysis
Based on the design drawings, reference datums are established for dimensional and GD&T evaluation, including hole diameter, hole position, flatness, parallelism, and surface profile.
Measured results are compared with nominal CAD data to verify dimensional deviations and tolerance compliance. Out-of-tolerance areas are automatically highlighted for further analysis and correction.

Build/Inspect
This function enables rapid fixture alignment, component positioning, and real-time adjustment. When the PMT Portable CMM probe contacts the fixture pallet, the software immediately calculates and displays positional deviations.
With real-time feedback, color indication, and audible alerts, operators can adjust the workpiece during measurement. Deviation values update instantly, enabling simultaneous measurement and adjustment until results fall within the acceptable range.

Report Generation
Measurement data can be organized and edited, tolerance settings applied, and 3D scenes captured before report generation. Reports can be exported in common formats such as PDF and Excel for quality traceability and further analysis.

Key Results Enabled by PMT Portable CMM
After implementing the PMT Portable CMM metrology solution, the company achieved significant improvements in fixture pallet inspection:
- Inspection time was reduced by nearly 50%, replacing manual measurement and fragmented records with a streamlined digital workflow.
- On-site deployment eliminated part transportation time.
- Real-time measurement and adjustment reduced rework and improved efficiency.
- Standardized PDF and Excel reports improved data management and quality traceability.
Conclusion: PMT Portable CMM Enables Closed-Loop Inspection
By implementing the PMT Portable CMM, the company established a complete, accurate, and traceable fixture pallet inspection workflow. The solution overcomes the limitations of traditional methods in accuracy, efficiency, and shop-floor flexibility, enabling real-time measurement and adjustment. As quality requirements continue to increase, Portable CMMs are becoming an essential tool for fixture inspection, process optimization, and quality assurance.
